Festive Frights: I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas

It's that time of year again, when thoughts turn to family and friends, food and drink, and gifts and giving. The television guides are full of seasonal specials and classic films such as It's A Wonderful Life and Miracle On 34th Street. But somewhere, nestled amongst the cheery sentimentality there is a shadow, a darker side raising a challenge to the baubles and the crackers. You may have to search carefully, it may be hidden away as a late night showing or on a channel that you rarely visit. But it will be there, lurking, waiting to be discovered. It is the Christmas horror film.

Horror Metal: The Dark Things in Life

As a fan of horror since the beginning, I’ve always gravitated towards the dark things in life, whether it is scary movies, books, or music.   You can’t tell by looking at me, because I look deceptively normal, but I’ve loved extreme heavy metal music since I was in high school in the early 1980’s.  There are so many different sub-genres of metal I listen to like, black metal, thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, doom metal, and the one I’m going to talk about...Horror metal.

The King of Ballyhoo - William Castle

Filmmaker William Castle was one of the greatest showmen that cinema has ever seen.   He was known as the King of Ballyhoo because of the wonderful gimmicks that he dreamed up for many of his horror films.  His gimmicks are legendary, even to this day.  Going to a William Castle film was an event in itself. Some of Castle’s standard gimmicks that he would use at many of his films were things like hiring screamers to sit throughout a theater and scream out loud at different intervals in the film.  He would also hire fake nurses to stand outside of theaters in case anyone was “injured by fright” or sometimes “frightened to death”, also parking ambulances and hearses in front of the theater for good effect.  Theater patrons never knew what they were in for when attending a William Castle film, which is why they always did such good business. People kept coming back for more and more.

Terry's 2012 Halloween Horrorthon!

As soon as October hits I treat every damn day like its Halloween. Its when us horror fanatics are in our prime and in our zone. We’re the experts in our field and the rulers of our domain. That domain being.. The world of horror and fright. Shadows and fear.. Makes you feel alive right? Horror is the only genre that can do that. Not many have plans for a horror movie situation. But WE do right? How many times have you all thought about how YOU would handle these movies if you were in them? Every year, I like to watch as many horror movies as I can throughout October. I like to have a theme also. The theme for this year was movies that I either haven’t seen, or haven’t seen a really long time. I managed to get pretty lucky with that. Some of the movies were kind of dated, and some were flat out horrible. But, most of them ended up being pretty damn good.

UK Exclusive: Day of a Thousand Screams Workprint Review

I had the pleasure recently of being the first horror journalist in the UK to see the workprint of Day of a Thousand Screams - the new low budget horror movie from American writer/director/actor Ruben Rox. The film which stars Catherine Franklin and Lucien Eisenach (along with Rox) sees late night TV news reporter Natasha McGrath sent out in to the Oregon wilderness with her crew to tape a segment on a local urban legend. Soon after their arrival, the crew are confronted by a strange man...this is when the nightmare begins.

Who is the Ultimate Horror Character of all Time?

As time goes by, the demand for blood, guts and gore has intensified among horror fans, and it’s this increased desire for death that has seen our favourite characters, such as Dracula, develop a greater thirst for blood. These aren’t always the films with the greatest storylines, as the need to please the viewer’s hunger for sinister killings has caused plots to suffer. However, with the bad comes the great and we have all seen some pretty amazing horror films that have made us wish we never had to go to bed.

Vinyl Nightmares

I'd like to reminisce about my childhood experiences with horror and delve into what made me the horror fanatic I am today.  One of my fondest memories is when I was 7 or 8 years old and had gotten my hands on some of the book-and-record sets put out by a company called Power Records.   Power Records was a branch of record label Peter Pan Records that specialized in children’s music.  Power Records was geared towards older children.  The book-and-record sets frequently featured original comic books along with an extended-play 7" record of the story.  These book-and-records sets were meant to aid in helping children with reading.  The tie-in to popular characters of the time would be the first in a long, successful series of story records based on television shows, comics and movies.  They had dozens of titles including such subjects as Superman, Batman, and Spiderman of the comics, Star Trek, Six Million Dollar Man, and Kojak from television, and some of the Planet of the Apes movies.  What drew me in was their line of monster book-and-record sets.  Their monster series was primarily based on Marvel comics characters.

The Devilz Wzisper: If you can hear it You are Dead! - A Short Story

The night breeze blew in from the west with a faint mellow jazz over-tone felt by the leaves hanging on for dear life from their tree branches.  Since the beginning of time the changing of seasons has waged war on their very existence, as a stranger walked the center line down a very illuminated street, unwearied from his travels.  He dressed in a nifty light-brown two piece suit and overcoat, carrying an attaché case with stickers from different cities overlaying it.  His shoes adsorbed the light casting a mirror reflection that revealed dark winged demons flying around as if trapped in a cage.  His smile showed content for humankind, as he softly whistled a chorus of Yankee Doodle Dandy.  Irate dogs in the neighborhood were silent, opposed to barking when something or someone walked down the street.   An owl closed its eyes tightly covering them with its wings, and every rock and pebble that he stepped towards rolled away.  Evil had arrived and he would be the teacher of children in this small town.  Then, just before the sun blessed mother earth with light he began vanishing, like a leaf being trampled by unaware people until he was gone.

To Haunt or Not to Haunt: The End of 'Most Haunted'?

After 8 years worth of investigations Living TV's hugely successful paranormal investigation series 'Most Haunted' was finally pulled from the channel and officially axed the show back in August of last year. With the future of the series now in the hands of its original creators Yvette Fielding and husband/co-producer Karl Beattie it’s still unknown quite how, where and when the unusual investigative series will continue. The long-running series consisted of small and ambitious investigations from all the major paranormal locations and hot spots around the UK and even abroad. With a selection of annual live hosted episodes and various celebrity participants we ask the question, how real is 'Most Haunted'?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO SURVIVE? UNITED BY XAVIER GENS' 'THE DIVIDE'

What Would You Do to Survive? United By Xavier Gens' 'The Divide'

French helmer Xavier Gens certainly enjoys his study of humanity. What lengths can people go to survive? His 2007 feature debut 'Frontier(s)' (AKA 'Frontière(s)') was a brutal account of a young pregnant girl's fight for survival at an 'out-of-town' motel owned by an inbred family of neo-Nazis. Tensions heightened further by the underpinning theme which runs adjacent to a backdrop of political unease in Paris. Gens' apocalyptic vision 'The Divide' goes one step further as a group of survivors hold up in the basement of their building as the city around them is decimated through a nuclear attack.
